The Monitor Buying Worksheet

Write down the source devices, desk limits, scaling, connection path, support terms, and arrival-day checks before comparing monitor listings.

Choose requirements from the work you actually do

Name the longest daily task and the problem that would make the purchase frustrating. Use that to mark requirements in the worksheet; compare candidates inside the same size, resolution, and connection limits.

Worked choice: the same desk for work and games

Fictional candidates illustrate the decision; these are not reviewed products.

For six hours of coding and one hour of gaming, both candidates meet the required size, resolution, inputs, and minimum refresh. Candidate A's stand reaches the needed height. Candidate B has a higher peak rate but needs an arm that puts the setup over budget. Keep A: its stand meets a daily requirement. If an affordable arm removes that difference, compare motion at frame rates the source can sustain before paying for B. Check text in the real work apps after arrival; a suitable specification list cannot settle readability.

1. Which devices must connect?

List every computer, console, dock, and work laptop you will use. For each one, note the video output, maximum mode you need, operating system, and whether the monitor must switch USB devices or charge a laptop. Include restrictions imposed by a managed work computer or an existing dock.

Write down: device → port or dock → required resolution and refresh → USB or charging need.

2. What physically fits the desk?

Measure desk depth, available width, and the height above the work surface. Check the stand footprint rather than only the panel width. If you will use an arm, verify the mounting pattern, monitor weight, arm range, and whether the desk can take the clamp or grommet.

Plan the viewing position with the chair, keyboard, and main task in place. OSHA's workstation guidance recommends a position that lets you read comfortably with your head and torso upright and places the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level; individual vision and workstation needs still vary.

Write down: maximum stand footprint, usable viewing distance, height range, and arm or stand requirement.

3. Which resolution and scaling feel usable?

Resolution, physical size, viewing distance, and interface scaling work together. More pixels do not automatically create more usable workspace if you need more scaling to read comfortably. Check whether every operating system and application in your workflow handles the intended scaling well.

Windows normally marks its preferred resolution as Recommended, while text and app size are controlled separately in Display settings. After delivery, use familiar documents and the text clarity page; a store demo at a different distance cannot answer this for your desk.

Write down: size range, native resolution, intended scaling per device, and the applications that must look right.

4. Can the entire connection path carry the mode?

Match the required resolution, refresh, color format, HDR mode, and adaptive sync to a specific monitor input. Then check the source, dock or adapter, and cable. A connector shape or broad version label does not guarantee that every feature works together.

USB-C adds another decision: how its high-speed lanes are shared between video and USB data, and how much power the monitor can provide. VESA's DisplayPort FAQ explains DisplayPort over USB-C and feature support, but the manuals for the exact source and monitor decide the usable combination.

Write down: required mode for each input, cable or adapter, USB speed, charging power, and switching behavior.

5. What happens if this unit is poor?

  • Who is the legal seller on the order, and what is the written return deadline?
  • Are opened products, missing packaging, or return shipping handled differently?
  • Which pixel policy and warranty apply to this model, region, condition, and purchase channel?
  • Is service an exchange, depot repair, onsite visit, or customer-paid shipment?
  • What photos, diagnostic steps, and identifiers does support request?

Do not substitute a forum summary for the documents attached to the purchase. Brand-level labels are not enough: pixel treatment and service can differ inside one product line.

Write down: seller, return deadline, return conditions, applicable pixel document, warranty route, and evidence requested.

6. What will you check on arrival day?

Save the listing, invoice, terms, and product documentation before they change. When the unit arrives, inspect the packaging and accessories, assemble the stand safely, update only what the manual requires, and confirm the intended resolution, refresh rate, and input mode.

Run the new monitor checkup before the seller window closes. Reproduce concerns before changing many settings, keep original photos, and use the defect report builder if support needs a clean record.

Complete after arrival: inspection date, configured mode, findings worth rechecking, and the last day to start a return.

Read a real manual: when USB speed changes the video option

This documentation exercise uses the Dell U2720Q/U2720QM User's Guide, January 2020, Rev. A00, printed page 42, checked September 20, 2026. It is not a product recommendation or a hands-on test. The example requirement is 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz plus USB 3.0 data over USB-C.

Worksheet decision: HBR2 misses this combined requirement; an unknown source link stays UNKNOWN. HBR2/HBR3 name DisplayPort link-rate modes. The manual directs owners to the monitor's Display Info → Link Rate (Current). Before purchase, verify the source, any dock, and cable documentation rather than inferring the link from the USB-C connector.

Keep the requirement, exact document/page, matching condition, and unresolved source capability together in the worksheet. Charging and stand fit remain separate requirements. After delivery, verify the actual video mode and USB devices; a documented combination is not an observation of your unit.
