Gaming Monitor Settings by Symptom
Fix a wrong refresh rate, tearing, stutter, motion trails, or washed-out HDR by changing the setting tied to what you can see.

The refresh rate is lower than expected
Start outside the game. Select the monitor in the operating system and confirm both resolution and refresh rate. In Windows, the current signal appears under Advanced display; Microsoft's refresh-rate guide also notes that an available rate can depend on the selected resolution and hardware.
If the target rate is absent, trace the whole path: GPU or console output, dock or adapter, cable, monitor input, and any input-specific mode in the monitor menu. Then check the game's display mode, resolution, and frame cap. Keep the browser check visible while comparing; it estimates frame cadence and does not measure the panel scan with a sensor.
The image tears
If the display supports variable refresh, enable it in the monitor first and then verify the GPU control. AMD Software normally enables FreeSync on compatible systems and exposes its status under Display settings; AMD documents that check. NVIDIA's G-SYNC setup page requires selecting the display and enabling the display-specific setting where applicable.
Test a repeatable camera pan in the game. If tearing remains, check whether that game is using fullscreen or windowed mode covered by the GPU setting, and whether its frame rate stays inside the monitor's documented variable-refresh range. Without variable refresh, use the game's synchronization option and compare the responsiveness trade-off. There is no single sync choice that is best for every game and frame-rate pattern.
Motion stutters even though the rate is correct
Separate frame delivery from panel response. Watch a scene that stutters, note the game frame-rate and frame-time graph if available, then lower one demanding graphics setting or apply one stable cap. If the hitch follows a loading event, CPU spike, shader compilation, or unstable frame time, overdrive is not the first control to change.
Also check power mode, background recording, overlays, and whether Windows Dynamic Refresh Rate is limiting a non-VRR game; Microsoft notes that DRR can lower the maximum refresh rate for some games. A frame cap can trade a lower peak for steadier delivery, but compare it in the same scene before keeping it.
Moving edges leave dark or bright trails
Start with the monitor's neutral or middle overdrive setting. Compare the moving pattern and a familiar game scene at high, middle, and low frame rates. A stronger setting can reduce one trail while creating a bright or dark inverse trail, so keep the mode with the least distracting combined artifact across the range you use.
Motion blur, panel transitions, camera motion, game anti-aliasing, upscaling, and display overdrive can overlap. The browser pattern helps compare modes on the complete system; it cannot produce the panel's advertised transition time.
HDR looks gray, clipped, or too bright
Verify three separate states: HDR is enabled for the selected display in the operating system, the game is actually outputting HDR, and the monitor is in the intended HDR input mode. Microsoft documents Windows display capabilities, the Use HDR control, and common SDR/HDR brightness mismatches in its HDR settings guide.
Compare the HDR-oriented patterns, then compare known HDR and SDR content. A browser capability signal does not prove that a game is outputting HDR, and an HDR logo alone does not describe black level, highlight behavior, tone mapping, or color performance.
When the setup finally looks right
Update the baseline you wrote at the start. If a game, driver, or operating-system update changes behavior, restore that known-good state before inventing a new stack of fixes.
