Blurry Monitor Text: Find What Changes Before You Replace the Screen

Start by comparing a comfortable-size text sample in your browser, another app, and the operating-system settings. A problem confined to one app needs a different next step from softness across the whole image.

Keep one reference unchanged

Open the 16px text reference on the affected display. Use your normal reading distance and a comfortable text size. The small 6px and 8px specimens are comparisons, not targets a monitor must pass.

  1. Record the monitor, source device, connection including any dock, picture preset, and room lighting.
  2. Read the resolution and scale from the operating system. Record the browser's zoom from its own menu. The website cannot reliably recover those separate settings from one pixel-ratio value.
  3. Look at the same words and characters: il1| O0 rn m. Note whether the problem is small size, soft edges, colored fringing, or confusing character shapes.
  4. Compare one change and then restore the original setting. Avoid changing zoom, font, sharpening, and connection together.

The test's pixel-ratio readout follows browser-reported changes. Page zoom can change it, while pinch zoom does not have the same effect. A changed ratio alone does not prove that the operating system chose a different resolution. MDN explains the distinction.

Resolution and scale solve different problems

If text is too small, lowering the signal resolution is not the same experiment as increasing text or interface size. Keep a note of the starting values so you can reverse a change that makes the whole image softer.

Windows

Open Settings → System → Display and select the affected monitor. Under Scale & layout, check Display resolution and Scale separately. Start from the Recommended choices and compare a supported larger scale if the text is too small. Microsoft notes that using a resolution below the display's native resolution can make text less sharp.

Open System Settings → Displays and select the display. Compare its default choice with the available larger-text option, then return to the baseline. Apple exposes display choices as thumbnails or a list depending on the setup; record the actual selection instead of assuming the Windows scale percentages apply.

For browser-only size changes, use the browser's zoom control and compare the same sample. Keep the more readable setting for ordinary work. There is no requirement to use 100% zoom or read the smallest line to obtain a useful observation.

When only one app looks wrong

Keep the display settings fixed. Reopen the affected app on the target screen and compare its own interface with its document. If the interface is clear but an embedded image or scanned page is soft, compare the original file in another viewer; a raster image has a different source from live text.

If a second viewer is clear, investigate the first app's zoom, rendering options, and current support instructions before changing monitor controls. Use the same file and installed font where possible. Different fonts and different nominal sizes are not a controlled panel comparison.

A screenshot viewed on another known-good display can help locate a problem in the captured content. If it also looks soft there, investigate the source or app. If it looks clear, continue checking the original viewing setup. Neither outcome alone rules out every driver, output, or display problem.

When the difference follows the display path

Record whether the monitor's own menu also looks soft. That menu is a different image source, so this is a useful observation, not a direct sharpness benchmark. Recheck the input resolution and any monitor scaling or sharpening mode in the exact model's manual.

If a suitable direct connection is available, compare it with the dock or adapter path at the same supported resolution and refresh rate. A difference suggests checking the connection capabilities and configuration. If the modes differ too, the comparison changed more than the cable; write that down before drawing a conclusion.

For persistent colored edges, keep the same font, size, background, and viewing position while comparing one supported setting. Browser font-smoothing examples may look identical because the browser or OS does not implement the requested hint. They cannot identify RGB, BGR, or another physical subpixel arrangement. MDN describes the nonstandard font-smoothing property.

If a fixed mark remains in the same physical position as the text moves, switch to the solid-color pixel check. That is a different observation from soft letter edges.

Use an A/B/A comparison you can explain

A is your recorded baseline. B changes one setting. Returning to A checks whether the original appearance comes back. If it does not, the comparison is inconclusive; another variable may have changed.

Worked example: readable size, not a repaired panel

This is a fictional observation log to illustrate the method, not a product test or measured result.

Save each observation in the text clarity test. Choose the smallest comfortable sample, “none,” or “not assessed” yourself. Add your A/B/A settings and comparison in the notes. The save includes the browser-reported pixel ratio and viewport at that moment; enter OS scale and browser zoom manually.
