Choose a Monitor by the Work You Actually Do
Set different priorities for office and coding, photo and video, gaming, or mixed media instead of shopping from one universal specification list.
Name the task that would expose a bad choice
“General use” is too vague. Write down the longest daily task and the failure that would make the monitor frustrating: soft text, unreliable color, motion artifacts, weak dark-room contrast, missing inputs, or a stand that never reaches the right position.
Use that sentence to rank trade-offs. Keep the shortlist inside the same size, resolution, and connection requirements; otherwise you are comparing whole setups rather than monitors.
Office and coding
Prioritize
Text clarity at your real scaling, a comfortable stand or arm, glare control, steady brightness, and the ports needed for the work computer. If one cable is the goal, verify laptop charging, USB data, display mode, and wake behavior with that exact computer or dock.
Trade off carefully
Extra refresh can make scrolling feel smoother, but it does not repair poor text rendering or an awkward desk position. A larger screen also needs enough distance and usable scaling. OSHA's workstation guidance is a useful placement check, not a substitute for individual needs.
Check after delivery
Open your editor, terminal, spreadsheet, and browser at the planned scale. Use the text clarity test, then adjust the actual chair and lighting rather than judging from a close-up photo.
Photo and video work
Prioritize
A defined color workflow: target color space, usable picture modes, calibration support, suitable bit-depth path, and published accuracy data with a named metric and conditions. Uniformity matters when decisions are made across the whole image.
Trade off carefully
A large gamut percentage does not state accuracy, tone response, white point, or how the monitor behaves outside one factory mode. An “HDR” label does not establish useful highlight control or black level. Budget for a compatible colorimeter when the work depends on numerical color.
Check after delivery
Use the uniformity and gradient pages to screen for visible problems. Use the instrument and software tied to your workflow for calibration and verification.
Gaming
Prioritize
A resolution and refresh combination the source can actually drive, the required input on that exact mode, a useful variable-refresh range, and overdrive behavior across the frame rates you play—not only at the highest rate.
Trade off carefully
A higher advertised refresh rate can demand more GPU work or a different connection mode. One response-time number does not show dark transitions, overshoot, or behavior at lower refresh rates. Decide whether resolution, steadier frame delivery, or the highest peak rate matters more for your games.
Check after delivery
Confirm the operating-system rate, then compare the browser cadence and motion pattern. Finish in a familiar game scene; the browser cannot isolate display-only latency or panel transitions.
Mixed media and entertainment
Prioritize
Contrast and reflection behavior in the room where you watch, support for the actual source formats, and simple input switching. Add speakers, a remote, or USB features only if they replace equipment you would otherwise need.
Trade off carefully
Bright-room glare control and dark-room black level can pull the decision in different directions. For HDR, use specific evidence such as a relevant VESA DisplayHDR tier, then look beyond the badge at real review measurements and your viewing conditions.
Check after delivery
Play known SDR and HDR scenes from the source you will keep. Compare the HDR-oriented patterns and dark screens from your normal seat, remembering that a browser capability result is not HDR certification.
The final filter is the return path
Before ordering, confirm the exact input limitations, stand fit, seller return window, pixel policy, and warranty for the model and region. After delivery, run the new monitor checkup while you still have time to act on a repeatable problem.
